General tips for taking virtual classes

Note: To participate in an in-person fitness class,  participants must provide proof of vaccination, including  booster. Masks must be worn at all times, while participating in classes. *VHP members and SCC employees must register for all class participation.

Be Safe:  You know your body and capabilities best. Only take these classes if you can do them safely throughout. Move at your own pace. Modify the activity to your capabilities. Always consult your physician beforehand.

Check Your Space: Take time to evaluate the space where you will be exercising. Make sure it is clear of any obstructions or potential hazards and that you have enough room. If you are outdoors, try to avoid being in direct sunlight.

Choose the Right Flooring: Exercise on an even floor. Exercising on the carpet for many classes (i.e. dance) is not recommended as you may trip or “catch” your shoes as you are moving.

Wear Comfortable Clothes: Wear comfortable and breathable clothing that allows for flexibility. Wear shoes that fit well and athletic socks that prevent rubbing or blisters.

Hydrate Regularly: Drink water before, during, and after your workout.

Warm-Up and Cool Down: Always take 5-10 minutes to warm up and cool down properly to prevent injury.

Zoom Instructions:

Plan by having a quiet space in your home where you will have room to move. We will be teaching classes through the Zoom platform. You can participate via your computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Get yourself ready by creating a FREE Zoom account. You do not need to purchase Zoom as a participant, just have the app on your device.

How to set up a free Zoom account:

Desktop or Laptop

  • Visit https://zoom.us and select Sign-up. 
  • Enter your information in the necessary fields. 
  • You will receive an email to activate your account.
  • Select Activate Account on the email and create your password for the account.

Mobile Device (iPhone, iPad, tablet)

  • Visit the app store and download ZOOM Cloud Meetings app. 
  • Once the app has downloaded, select SIGN UP and follow the prompts to create your account. 
  • You will receive an email to activate your account.
  • Select Activate Account on the email and create your password.
  • Test your Audio and Video 
  • Once you have created your account, we recommend you test your audio and video. You will get prompted to do this when you sign up. 

How to sign into a class

  • Click on the link from the schedule of the class you want to participate in.
  • Enter passcode (please refer to the class schedule).
  • You can turn off your video if you would like, and you will be placed on mute upon entry so that class is not disrupted.
  • Once the class ends, the instructor will end the meeting which automatically signs you out of the class
  • ​If no participants join the class, the instructor will cancel after 15 minutes.​​
