Mental Health Counseling Services - Outpatient
Valley Health Plan (VHP) provides improved access to Mental Health Counseling services for you and your family. You are no longer required to request this type of referral from your Primary Care Physician (PCP), although you may want to discuss your need for this type of service with your PCP. Your PCP can be helpful in ways other than arranging for Mental Health Counseling services.

To access outpatient mental health counseling services, you may contact a VHP Mental Health Provider directly or you can contact the VHP Utilization Management Department at 408.885.4647 for assistance in obtaining care.  You can also use our Provider Search to find a Mental Health Provider near you!

Mental Health Services provided by a Psychiatrist - Outpatient
Prior Authorization is required to receive outpatient psychiatric services. Contact your Primary Care Physician or your VHP Network Mental Health Provider for a referral.  All referrals are reviewed by VHP's Mental Health Medical Director.

Mental Health Services – Inpatient
Your VHP Mental Health Provider will make arrangements for covered services when Medically Necessary.

NOTE:  In order to receive outpatient psychiatric services, a "Treatment Authorization Request for Services" form must be completed by your PCP or your VHP Network Mental Health Provider and approved by VHP's Mental Health Medical Director.
