Health Coverage Exemptions May Apply to You
Health coverage exemptions are available for a variety or reasons. Most people who do not have health coverage must pay a fee, but some people can qualify for an exemption. Use the exemptions tool HealthCare.gov Exemption Tool to see if any exemptions apply to you. For more information and links to applications, visit HealthCare.gov Exemptions.
If you qualify, apply, and are granted a hardship exemption, you will be able to buy a catastrophic/minimum coverage plan no matter how old you are or what your income is. A catastrophic/minimum coverage plan offers lower-priced coverage that mainly protects you from high medical costs if you get seriously hurt or injured. Catastrophic/Minimum coverage with a hardship cannot be subsidized and can only be purchased directly through Valley Health Plan’s Individual and Family Plan. This exemption cannot be used to buy insurance through Covered California.
To buy catastrophic/minimum coverage with a hardship, bring the Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) you received from the Federal Government to Valley Health Plan to buy the coverage of your choice. Note: If you get a hardship exemption, you do not have to buy a catastrophic/minimum coverage plan. It’s just an option available to you.
